A contemporary Gulf variation on the Mule, sweetened with dates—one of the region’s oldest and most culturally significant crops. This is a clearly labeled house field riff rather than a historical classic: Coffee contributes roasted depth and a clandestine after-dark character.

Vodka · yields one cocktail

Ingredients

  • 12 oz vodka
  • 21/2 oz lime juice
  • 33 oz ginger beer
  • 42 muddled dates
  • 51/4 oz coffee liqueur

Method

  1. 01Muddle dates, shake with vodka and lime, strain over ice, and top with ginger beer.
  2. 02Add the coffee liqueur before mixing and omit a little sweetener if desired.
